Neighborhood Clean Up 2014

UDM Law School's Community Service Committee held its kickoff service project—Neighborhood Cleanup Day on April 24 (photo gallery). More than 30 students, faculty, administrators and staff gathered to beautify the Law School's surrounding neighborhood.

Enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers picked up more than 30 bags of trash and debris and the difference was notable. Professor Julia Belian commented, "Watching the whole neighborhood of UDM Law pitch in to clean up our little slice of the earth was great. Even better was the sense of ownership it developed. I kept hearing students say things like, just wait until the next time I see someone throw a cigarette butt in this courtyard!"

Even though it is a busy time of the year at the Law School, volunteers came out in force to make a difference, give back and serve our community. Following the cleanup, volunteers were treated to a wonderful cookout to recognize their service. Students were also entered into a drawing to win a private study room at the clinic during finals.

This was the first of many service projects planned by the Community Service Committee. Future projects include a service day with the Belle Isle Conservatory, hosting a cookout for local veterans, packing art kits for Detroit youth, clearing vacant lots in Detroit and hosting a holiday party at a Detroit elementary school.
