    Meet Milaka

Milaka took her education from Detroit all the way to Western Cape University in Cape Town, South Africa.

“During my study abroad, I studied comparative and international law with law students from around the world.  I experienced the local community and legal system while interning with a law firm specializing in family law.  I learned that traveling the world will teach you plenty, but on the journey you will learn the most about yourself.”

    Meet Livia

Livia took her education from Detroit all the way to Venice, Italy.

“My study abroad provided the perfect mix of academics and leisure.  I completed courses on international arbitration, comparative corporate governance, and comparative perspectives on counterterrorism.  Additionally, the opportunity to learn, live, and breath the Venetian culture made this one of my best law school experiences.  I learned to make the most of the world around me and gained diverse perspectives on legal issues.”

    International Opportunities Program

Students who participate in a summer study abroad program may apply for a $1,000 forgivable loan through the International Opportunities Program.  This loan, which is forgiven upon the student’s successful completion of the program and return to Detroit Mercy Law, is granted in advance of the program, and is intended to defray travel and accommodation expenses related to foreign study.  Students may apply for this loan after they have been accepted to and enrolled in an approved summer study abroad program.

    Financial Aid

Students attending an ABA-approved study abroad program are typically eligible for financial aid to cover the cost of program tuition, provided that the student is otherwise eligible for U.S. federal financial aid.  You may apply for Term III financial aid through the Detroit Mercy Law financial aid office once you have been accepted into a program. For more information about the study abroad financial aid opportunities, please visit the Summer Study & Study Abroad Financial Aid Section of our website.

    Process

Students must obtain approval from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to enroll in any summer study abroad program.  Deadlines vary by program.

Study abroad programs may satisfy Detroit Mercy Law’s Global/International Course requirement.  Students should refer to Detroit Mercy Law’s policy on taking courses at another institution, as provided in the Student Handbook.  Students enrolled in the Dual JD program are not eligible to count courses taken through a study abroad program towards the 60 Detroit Mercy credits required for graduation.
