Career Opportunities Spotlight: Detroit Mercy Law student working as a law clerk in the Michigan Governor’s Office of Legal Counsel

November 09, 2021

Emily Elmer ’23 recently began working as a law clerk in the Office of Legal Counsel in Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s executive office. “I met a Deputy Legal Counsel for the Governor during a mock interview that was hosted by the Wolverine Bar Association. She thought I did well in the interview, and we stayed connected afterwards,” she explained. “A few weeks later she reached out to me about applying for an externship position at the Office of Legal Counsel for Governor Whitmer.”

“I did not accept this position because it fell within a predefined career path I had identified for myself. I accepted it because I am acutely aware of the challenges Covid-19 has inflicted on the citizens of our State,” said Elmer. “I felt it was my responsibility to help the citizens of Michigan in whatever way I was best able. Working within the Office of Legal Counsel has given me that opportunity.”

At Detroit Mercy Law, Elmer is the fundraising committee chair for the Black Law Students Association. “BLSA is a wonderful organization to be a part of and we have so many great resources for our members. Every single person on our e-Board inspires me every day with their hard work and commitment uplifting the community within the school and beyond”
