Two weeks past my technical last day and I suppose you’d expect me to be all relaxed and enjoying that everything is over and done. Unfortunately that’s not quite the case. While the end of classes marks one part of the process life as a law student doesn’t quite end when the classroom part does. Knowing the bar exams and job search aren’t over yet also makes it difficult to feel the normal elation of finishing a degree.

Unlike many students I decided to give up my house at the end of April in order to avoid having to pay rent for May when I would be here for only a week. As a result I went right from essays to packing and cleaning. The downside to having a home base just within driving distance is you can’t quite justify selling everything only to replace it a few months later. The whole house got packed in just under 3 days. Then there was all the cleaning and truck loading. This was followed by a full day’s drive back to Ottawa, another day of driving to return the truck in New York (renting a moving truck through the US is significantly cheaper and luckily both my start and end destinations were within a few hours of the border). Finally last Thursday I took a train back to Windsor and have been staying with friends this week while I finish the last few items on my to-do list.

You would think by this point the list would be short but I still have had to sort out the last of our clothing order, sell a few more text books, pick up everything for graduation and finish up with my clinic responsibilities. Writing this is actually my last item for the day.

I’ve also started doing my bar preparations. Ontario is split across June and then I have another 5 and a half weeks to prepare for the New York Bar. Studying for both is quite the challenge but luckily the Ontario one is open book. I also invested in a Bar prep course on the American side which so far seems to have been a good choice.

I’m hoping to continue updating you occasionally until I write the bar. The next time I post I will finally officially be a JD.
