Career Services Office (CSO)

The CSO assists students and alumni in embarking on successful and rewarding careers and obtaining employment by exploring their individual goals and interests; developing realistic expectations about the legal job market; identifying opportunities for summer and permanent employment; and, preparing for and conducting a job search.

The CSO is committed to providing comprehensive services to all students and graduates regardless of career objectives, GPA, class ranking, or any other criteria.

Lunch and Learn with the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan-Wayne Region

The Career Services Office recently hosted a Lunch and Learn event with the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan-Wayne Region. The event brought to UDM Law a dedicated panel of female professionals who spoke to students about their different experiences. Each panelist spoke about what they liked and disliked about their specific practice and firm. A common dislike was the short notice for a meeting or a task. The panel also informed students about the appropriate dress code in each of their respective firms. The trend in each of the panelist’s firms was professional business attire with some firms hosting a casual Friday. The panelists advised students on traits that they thought are useful in successfully fitting in to various sized firms. Susanna Brennan, a Recruitment Director for Kelly Law Registry thinks that “Responding to clients and colleagues promptly” is a tip that allows you to succeed at a firm. L. Nichole Hunter, a shareholder with the Allan Law Group in Detroit, and the president of Women Lawyers Association of Michigan – Wayne Region, said “being personable with both clients and colleagues” is important when you are trying to fit into a firm.  To top the event off, Elizabeth Jolliffe, a career management and business development coach for lawyers, who was leading the panel, asked each panelist how could students obtain employment at their firms. Allison Bach, a Partner at Dickinson Wright, advised students to, “be a team player but be distinguishable”, “get good grades,” and “be ready to talk about everything you have on your resume.”
