Dedicated to Social Justice

Detroit Mercy Law is inspired by the Jesuit-Mercy tradition of service to others and dedication to the full development of each and every student. Students represent vulnerable members of our community and work to restore hope to victims of abuse and oppression in our nationally-ranked clinical program. While we are proud that our clinical program is recognized nationally, we are even prouder of the work our students do in this program. For example, in our Immigration Clinic students advocate for those seeking asylum in the United States and Canada. In other clinics, students represent low-income veterans seeking federal veterans benefits, criminal defendants with misdemeanor cases, and juveniles in the Michigan Court of Appeals. In each of the clinics, students learn valuable skills and make a difference in the lives of others.

Detroit Mercy Law is also actively involved in the Detroit community with regular service projects in which faculty, staff, and students work together. For instance, students and staff volunteer regularly at the Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church Warming Center adjacent to our Law School. Detroit Mercy Law also supports students who want to work for public interest groups such as Freedom House, the State Appellate Defender's Office, and other legal aid organizations with our Public Service Fellowships.

Detroit Mercy Law is dedicated to providing every student with the support needed to be successful. Our accessible faculty members provide an intellectually-demanding course of study and are readily available to answer question and serve as mentors. Our academic support team provides students with additional assistance and help needed to succeed in law school. In addition, our many active student organizations provide students the opportunity to develop the leadership skills needed to become leaders in their communities after graduation.
