Why did you choose UDM Law?
I chose UDM Law because of the institution's genuine commitment to producing practice ready attorneys. From the administration to the faculty and staff, students readily sense the collegial community on the school's campus, which makes it easier for us to focus on our studies and careers knowing that we have the support of the entire UDM Law community behind us. Additionally, as a Catholic, I truly love learning the law at a Roman Catholic law school affiliated with the Society of Jesus. Shout out to Pope Francis, who is also a Jesuit. I digress...
What do you like best about attending law school in Detroit?
My favorite part of attending law school in Detroit is experiencing the general excitement and daily activity of downtown Detroit, along with its proximity to federal, state, and municipal courts, some of the region's largest law firms and multinational corporations. Also, exploring the architecturally and culturally rich buildings throughout downtown makes for a great history lesson in between classes, and catching a Tigers or Red Wings game after class is always a win, no matter what the final score reads.
What surprised you most about law school?
The light course load. Just kidding, I think the most surprising aspect of law school – and I think most students would agree – is the amount of time and effort required in order to succeed. Between reading and briefing cases, researching the law, and writing memos and briefs, you constantly feel like you can always do something more to be better prepared. Law school makes undergrad feel like high school.
How would you describe the UDM Law community?
I would describe the UDM Law school community as one grounded in values. Values such as hard work, respect, integrity, leadership, diversity, tradition, and community service immediately come to mind.
What have you benefitted from the most at UDM Law?
I have benefitted the most at UDM Law by developing practical legal skills such as researching the law, drafting legal documents, advocating for my client, and developing the professional skills expected of a first-year lawyer through the school's Law Firm Program.
Where would you like to be ten years from now, and what role will your UDM education or the UDM community play in getting you there?
In ten years, I plan to be a prominent leader in the business, legal, and philanthropic communities in Detroit and throughout the state of Michigan. Concurrently pursuing my J.D. and MBA at UDM is preparing me to accomplish this goal by developing the legal skills and business acumen to analyze some of the most challenging issues facing our city, region, and state. Resolving those issues by drawing upon on a breadth of knowledge from two separate yet often intertwining professional fields is a unique skill which I plan to hone.
Why would you recommend UDM Law to a prospective student?
I would recommend UDM Law to a prospective student because it will give you the same opportunities it has afforded me (see above) and prepare you to become a practice ready attorney. The best piece of advice I received before enrolling at UDM Law came from my sister Angelina (UDM Law '13) and that is, "you get out what you put in." That is especially true here at UDM Law: you can create for yourself any experience you desire. In essence, "you reap what you sow." I have come to learn that this pearl of wisdom also applies to life in general. Go Titans.
