Happy 100th Blog Post to Me! 

It is important to celebrate important milestones in life. I’m celebrating this milestone by eating a cookie…and then working on homework. (I should point out at this point that I’m not a loser who counts her blog posts. When I save my posts to e-mail them in, I cleverly title them “blog1,” “blog2,” “blog3,” etc...) 

We are at the point in the semester where I am challenging myself more than ever. Time management is crucial, and I am having to really keep my procrastination in check. 

This week was a pretty fun week, all things considered. On Wednesday, I got to watch the send-off for one of the moot court teams. This team is going to the Mercer competition, and the case they are arguing is essentially the same question as our advanced advocacy class is writing. It was neat to get to see the oral argument, and it also gave me a few ideas of how to approach certain points in my own argument. 

In my criminal procedure class, we are learning about the right to a jury trial, and the jury selection process, voir dire. On Thursday, we had an in-class exercise where we were divided into groups, and each group was given a hypothetical set of case facts and assigned a side. Then, people who were not assigned to a particular “case” would serve as jurors, who all had certain roles to play. Our goal was to figure out the appropriate questions to ask during voir dire to identify the one juror for each side that we should remove. It was a fun break from our usual class, and it was one of those moments where we got to start feeling lawyery.  

Today, I don’t have classes or anything on my schedule. My goal for the day is to finish this blog post, complete my summary of argument for advanced advocacy (due Sunday), then complete my externship research paper. My externship research paper is due on Monday, and it got to be about the legal topic of my choice. Prof. Krisciunas recommended my topic for me, and I am writing about the extent to which police can lie to suspects during interrogation. It’s been a pretty interesting topic, and it fits in well with my Law and Order: SVU watching…and because I always read my e-mails, and followed directions, I only have to write five pages. Woot. 

If I finish all of this stuff today, there will be major celebrating. Maybe instead of just a cookie, I will upgrade to a celebration cupcake…

Meagan is a May 2012 graduate of UDM Law. She was admitted to the Michigan Bar in November, and she recently joined the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor’s Office as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney.

During law school, Meagan was active around the School of Law as the Law Review's Executive Editor of Outside Articles and the Vice-President of the St. Thomas More Society. She participated in the Criminal Trial Clinic, and took advantage of two internships with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office and a summer internship with Judge Stephen Murphy of the Eastern District of Michigan.

In her free time, Meagan also serves as a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, enjoys tap dancing, and can't resist reading a good book.
