The heat in Texas is in triple digits, and my internship is in full swing. Working for a non-profit is quite the experience. The lack of personnel means Law Clerks take on a lot of different tasks. I am learning so much, and am able to apply what I learned during 1L Year to the activities I'm assigned. Writing petitions, talking to clients, and lots and lots of research. The team is great, the atmosphere is relaxed, and so far we haven't lost a j...

This will be my last post as a UDM blogger :(  I graduated last weekend, and now I'm about to start my bar prep class, PASS the BAR(!), and start my career in September!   To follow up on my last post, life did get a bit crazy after my trial so I never got around to telling you about it.  It sure was hard, but it actually went really well and I can honestly say that I had fun now that I look back on it.  My Trial Practice cla...

Two weeks past my technical last day and I suppose you’d expect me to be all relaxed and enjoying that everything is over and done. Unfortunately that’s not quite the case. While the end of classes marks one part of the process life as a law student doesn’t quite end when the classroom part does. Knowing the bar exams and job search aren’t over yet also makes it difficult to feel the normal elation of finishing a degree. Unlike many students I d...

It’s pouring rain outside and yet today is one of the most beautiful days I’ve ever seen. The last week or two have been filled with many challenges and horrible events. Multiple bombings, 3 large magnitude earthquakes and more attempted terrorist plots. I’ve even had a few hiccups of my own with my building sewer attempting to explode (not actually but it wasn’t fun), 2 papers, 2 exams, class clothing orders coming in wrong, and co-running our D...

In two weeks I'll be studying for my last final as a 1L. In a few hours I'll have turned in my last writing assignment in ALTA. In a couple weeks I'll be back home in Texas. Just like in Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, things always turn out okay after a thrilling escape. If you're on the fence about going to law school, do it! It'll be the ride of your life... ...

I'm going to be doing my first full trial tonight, as part of my Trial Practice class.  Its basically our final exam for that class, so each aspect of our performance will be graded.   I wanted to write this blog post in 2 phases to give you the full spectrum.  The first being today, right before the trial actually happens - because as we speak, I'm in at the height of stress and nervousness!  So this post will be more about ...

The past week has flown by and the last week of classes is upon us. One of the most common questions I get asked about the program is how we go to both schools at once, so for today here’s some insight into how the calendars from the two schools merge. For the Fall Semester UDM starts classes mid-August while Windsor starts following Labour Day two weeks later. As a result UDM typically goes into exams about one week earlier, but this normally o...

One of the things that drew me to this school was the seemingly close-knit atmosphere.  I liked that the school was small, etc.  And now that I've been here for 3 years, I can say that the school has really delivered that culture to me.  It is really nice to walk down the hallway and have 5 to 10 people say "Hi Alison, how are you doing" and often even ask other questions because they actually know me.  Its students, faculty, ...

This past week, we got to register for next semester's classes. It was fun picking classes for myself (whereas a 1L's curriculum is set by the school). It's also pretty amazing how different my schedule is compared to my classmates'. Honestly, not too much has changed. Still outlining (reviewing my notes) to gear up for finals, still keeping up with the reading assignments, still working on the last assignments for ALTA (writing class). Extracu...

One of the unique aspects of UDM is that it is a Jesuit university. When Detroit College opened in 1877 it was run by the Society of Jesus. The Law school was established in 1812 making this our school’s centennial year. In 1920 Detroit College became the University of Detroit and retained its Jesuit roots. Then in 1990 the University merged with the Mercy College of Detroit run by the Sisters of Mercy, an Irish Catholic Order. This created what ...
