I remember sitting in one of the prospective student open house presentations before starting law school listening to a member of the administration who tried to warn us about the amount of writing that we would do in law school.  I didn't understand how much of an understatement that was.  I've been working on the same document today for about nine hours and it hasn't grown much in length at all.  So, it seemed like a good time to...

About a week or so back I had the opportunity to meet with several prospective law students.  It had been a while since my schedule allowed me to participate in showing off UDM and talking to people about some of the great things it has to offer, but I was quickly reminded of one particular question that never fails to come up.  Each time that I have been able to meet prospective students I have always been asked: "Is it hard to do law...

Work as hard as you can to study for finals.  Don't waste a minute.  It will be worth it.  You can recover after the last final for two whole weeks.   All of the above is usually true.  In past years, all of those statements have been true.  This term, however, my break just started about an hour ago and it will end at 8pm tomorrow when I return to class. If you did the math, then yes, that really is only about 24 h...

‘Twas 10 Days Before Finals   ‘Twas 10 days before finals, and all through the halls, Smartphones began chiming, but not for phone calls. Each student looked down, and tried not to shout, but it was too late, another mass email had just come out.   The look of sheer panic, and an occasional pout, each student read what it said: Go study or flunk out! The gunners, they scrambled, they knew just what to do, the real issue is, wh...

The hype is about the fact that UDM's Moot Court board has reached the point in the fall semester where its National teams start hitting the road, the Advanced Advocacy briefs are coming due, and the Ernie Goodman Mock trial competition takes place.  Basically, the Moot Court board is BUSY! First, in the past two weeks two teams have gone out to represent UDM's Moot Court in two National Competitions.  Yesterday, we received some very ...

What a busy week!  It has been a while since anything has been post worthy, but lately campus has been full of activity and there's been lots of chatter of bar results, winter schedules, and current events. To start, this past week the student organization Law Students with Children hosted a Trick-or-Treat event at the school on Wednesday evening. Lots of really cute kids were running around campus in costume collecting candy that was donat...

The semester is well under way and so far there isn't anything too exciting to report.  This is the point in the term that I start to realize how monotonous every single day is.  Everyday it is the same thing: work, school (or homework), sleep (only a little) and then repeat.  Sounds really exciting right?  Actually, it feels pretty pathetic.  Sometimes I get really irritated that it is my favorite time of year and I get ...

This week is an exciting week for all incoming first years to UDM Law because it is orientation week!  On Monday, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet many of the new students during the Professionalism in Action reception.  Everyone was very nice, had great energy, and seemed really eager to dive in and get the semester started.  That was my perception anyway, and it is quite possible that many were just better at hi...

Summer exams are over! (That statement of course excludes those recent grads who are sitting for the bar over the next two days....ALL THE BEST TO EACH OF YOU!)  So, now what?! Well, for me, I'll be focusing on catching up with friends, getting everything back in line at work, and just trying to do as little as possible - I might even relax...might!  Doing as little as possible is completely not my style, but as I look forward...

It's official:  30 days remain until exams are over and a well earned break presents itself.  The challenge will be to remain focused as the weather gets warm (hopefully), friends start emerging from their winter hibernation, and events at school and around town begin to seem worthwhile again.  Really, what happens to me is that I start looking for any and every distraction available in order to do anything but study. That is a rec...
