Red Mass 2016

Detroit Mercy Law will host its 104th annual Red Mass on September 20, 2016 at noon at Ss. Peter & Paul Jesuit Church, followed by a complimentary luncheon in the atrium. Red Mass is an opportunity for law students, judges, lawyers, civic leaders, faculty, staff, and administrators of all faiths to come together and celebrate the beginning of the new judicial term and academic year. The School has hosted the Red Mass on behalf of the Archdiocese of Detroit at Saints Peter and Paul since the School opened in 1912.

McElroy Lecture on Law and Religion

Our annual McElroy Lecture provides a forum for prominent thinkers and leaders to address fundamental issues of law and religion. This year's lecturer is Professor Kent Greenawalt of Columbia Law School addressing religious exemptions in same-sex marriages. Professor Greenawalt will be joined by commentators Andrew Koppelman of Northwestern University and Michael Moreland of Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law and University of Notre Dame Law School. Law Review Centennial Symposium

The Law Review will host a symposium on March 4, 2016, in celebration of its centennial year. The symposium will feature legal professionals and scholars from the City of Detroit and across the country to discuss legal issues confronted throughout Detroit's history, today, and issues that may arise in the future. Red Mass

UDM's 103rd Annual Red Mass and Renewal of the Lawyer's Oath of Commitment will be held at Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church beginning at 12:00 p.m., followed by a complimentary luncheon in the atrium of the School of Law.  Red Mass is an occasion for judges, lawyers, civic leaders, faculty, staff, and law students of all faiths to pray together at the beginning of the new judicial term, asking God to bless, strengthen, and enlighten us, so that in cooperation and mutual trust we may effectively achieve justice for all. The Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Ph.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, will celebrate the Mass.  Hon. Patrick J. Duggan ('58) of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan will lead the Renewal of the Lawyer's Oath of Commitment. Detroit Mercy Law's Fall 2015 Mandatory JD Orientation. UDM BLSA VEGAS NIGHT – 10th Anniversary

This annual casino-style fundraiser event is sponsored by the Black Law Student Association, UDM Law Chapter. Proceeds support scholarships in honor of alumna Hon. Denise Langford Morris ‘82 and outreach programming that exposes high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to the legal profession. There is no cost for incoming students and Special Summer Program participants to attend this event but registration is required. The Honorable Denise Langford Morris ’82 is a judge for the Sixth Circuit Court in Oakland County, Michigan. In 1992, she was the first African American to hold that post and currently the longest serving female judge on the Sixth Circuit bench.
