Professor Brown worked in Washington D.C. after law school, first as a staff attorney for the Urban Law Institute, then as an attorney for Legal Services for the Elderly. He began his teaching career at Syracuse University, where he was also Director of the Center for Legal Services for the Aging. Professor Brown has been on the faculty of the University of Detroit Mercy since 1975.
Former Chairman of the Aging and the Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools, Professor Brown has been a Commissioner of the American Bar Association Commission on Legal Problems of the Elderly, a member of the Senior Justice Committee of the State Bar of Michigan, and a Director of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging. Professor Brown is the author of The Rights of Older Persons (2nd Ed. Southern Illinois University Press 1989) and Krauskopf, Brown, Tokarz and Bogutz, Elderlaw: Advocacy for the Aging (2nd Ed. West 1993). Professor Brown often writes on elderlaw and is a frequent lecturer and consultant on aging and health issues with lawyers, social service agencies and the government.
Professor Brown has been on the boards of several non-profit social service agencies in Metropolitan Detroit. At present, he serves as a Trustee of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan and is a member of the Salvation Army's Advisory Board for Metropolitan Detroit, serving as Vice-Chairperson of the Board.
