Welcome to Detroit mercy Law Academics

Our curriculum is designed to integrate theory, doctrine and practice to produce graduates who are practice ready. We achieve this through a layered approach to professional education, which starts with the theoretical and doctrinal foundations of the law in the first year. Moving into the subsequent years of training, more advanced doctrinal courses expose students to a wider body of law and to other legal systems through our array of international courses. Students are expected to take at least one course exposing them to another legal system. Students also have the opportunity to explore particular topics in depth with a variety of seminars. These seminars, as well as the writing assignments in the upper level required courses, will hone writing skills and allow students to develop a work product portfolio. Moving toward completion of their degrees, all students will complete one clinic and three credit hours of law firm program courses that take their theoretical and doctrinal training and put it to the service of a client in a real or simulated case.

A student at our law school will:

  • engage in live-client representation or related practice
  • participate in sophisticated simulations
  • develop a portfolio of written work product
  • develop a fidelity to ethical standards
  • understand the importance of the global community in the practice of law
  • learn to serve others and
  • be exposed to the School's Jesuit and Mercy identity in ways that promote discussions about the intersection of faith and law

If you have any questions, please contact Pam Wilkins, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, at (313) 596-0250.
