Below is a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) by our incoming JD students. Topics include orientation, financial aid, housing, and more. If there is a question that is not answered below, please do not hesitate to contact your admissions counselor for more information.

Orientation

When is Orientation?

Mandatory 1L Orientation will be scheduled for mid-late August. The dates have yet to be determined. Day students will attend during the Day and evening students in the evening. Dates and a schedule of events will be posted to the orientation webpage when they become available.

Do I have to attend Orientation?

Yes, events are mandatory for every 1L student and attendance is taken.

Deposits

How can I pay my commitment deposit?

Via Mail

You may pay your commitment deposit by submitting a check or money order in U.S. funds payable to the University of Detroit Mercy. The payment should be mailed to the following address:

Via Online

You may pay online using your credit card (Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and Visa) by accessing your account information through TitanConnect. A convenience fee of 2.75% will be added to your credit payment. Instructions are as follows:

  • Log into TItanConnect with your username and password
  • Click on "TitanConnect Self Service"
  • Click on "Student" Tab
  • Click on "Make a Payment" Tab (you will be taken to the online payment site)
  • Click on "Law School Deposit" to enter an amount different than the current balance
  • Add to shopping cart
  • Check box to acknowledge and accept "Terms and Conditions" of the service charge amount
  • Continue Checkout
  • Select a method of payment
  • Enter account information and Continue Checkout
  • Submit Payment

Once the payment has been submitted, you must notify the Admissions Office of the transaction via email.

Is my deposit refundable?

All commitment deposits are non-refundable.

Financial Aid / Tuition Payments

Are there directions somewhere for accepting my award, setting up direct deposit, and other Financial Aid matters?
 
Absolutely!  The TitanConnect E-guide has directions on accepting your award, completing entrance counseling and master promissory notes, setting up direct deposit, obtaining proof of enrollment, making payments online, obtaining your federal PIN, viewing your account balance, and borrowing private loans.

I received an e-mail saying that my Financial Aid application is incomplete because I am missing "Terms and Conditions." What is this and how do I take care of it?

The "Terms and Conditions" request goes on every student's file automatically when we receive a FAFSA to ensure that no one forgets to request the Terms and Conditions statement when your award is processed. You will be able to accept the Terms and Conditions once you have a financial aid award. It will be the third tab on the award screen.

I went online and completed my Promissory Note(s) and/or Entrance Interview, but TitanConnect is still not showing that these documents have been received. Do I need to do these again?

Probably not. The Federal Direct Loan Program will start transmitting 2014-15 documents to us on or after July 1. We expect to receive and post the bulk of the documents by July 15. If your TitanConnect account shows that those items are still missing after July 15, please contact the Financial Aid Office.

When I went online to do my Promissory Note(s) and/or Exit Interview, I couldn't find the University of Detroit Mercy Law School on the schools list, just University of Detroit Mercy. Is that the one I should use?

Yes. We process loans as one school, so the University of Detroit Mercy option is good for students on all campuses.

When will I receive my financial aid refund?

First-year students whose files are complete and whose credit has been approved (if receiving a Graduate PLUS loan) will begin receiving refunds sometime during orientation week or the first week of classes. Thus, students should be prepared to purchase books and have living expenses for at least those first two weeks of their law school experience.

Students who change their enrollment or living status or who are receiving outside aid are reminded that they need to notify a Financial Aid staff member so that any necessary revisions may be made in a timely manner. Failure to notify the Financial Aid Office of changes may result in delays in refunds and/or changes in the refund amount.

When is tuition due?

Tuition is due by the first day of classes.

How do I make a tuition payment?

Students may make a payment on TitanConnect from a checking or savings account, as long as the bank is located in the U.S. Students may also make payment on TitanConnect using a Mastercard, Discover or American Express credit or debit card, but there is a 2.75% convenience fee to do so.

Students with accounts at foreign banks may pay by paper check or money order (preferably in U.S. funds) made payable to the University of Detroit Mercy. Checks and money orders not payable in U.S. funds will have amounts adjusted according to the exchange rate in effect at the time of receipt by the University's bank. Checks and money orders should include the student's ID number and may be mailed to the Student Accounting Office, University of Detroit Mercy, 4001 W. McNichols, Detroit, MI 48221 or brought into the Law School Student Service Center. The Law School Student Service Center does not accept cash; cash payments may be made in person only at the Student Accounting Office at the McNichols campus. The Student Accounting Office may also arrange to accept an electronic funds transfer from a student's or parent's bank account. Students may contact the Student Accounting Office at 313-993-1420 for more information about payments.

Does UDM have a payment plan?

Yes. The University of Detroit Mercy uses Tuition Management Systems (TMS) to make monthly payment arrangements for students. There is a $60 fee (subject to change by TMS) for a full-year payment plan or a $44 per term fee for semester payment plans. The full-year payment plan usually begins in August and ends in May, allowing for ten monthly payments of the amount financed. There is no interest charged on the TMS plan.

Students may learn about the TMS plan by visiting their website or by calling 1- 800-722-4867. While TMS accepts credit cards, there is a convenience fee to do so. We therefore recommend making the payments by check or money order.

More information about the TMS plan will be forwarded to students over the summer.

Is there a TitanConnect tutorial that I can view?

Yes! The IT department has a comprehensive list of TitanConnect instructions on their website.

I'm locked out of my TitanConnect! How can I reset my password?

You will need to contact the IT Helpdesk at 313-993-1500 for assistance. Please note that you will need your student ID number.

Can I forward my UDM student e-mail to my phone?

Instructions on how to forward your student e-mail to a mobile device can be found here.

Once I've been registered, how do I view my schedule in TitanConnect?

To view your schedule, log in to TitanConnect.  Then click TitanConnect Self-Service > Student > Registration > Student Detail Schedule > Select Term: "Fall 2015."

Registration / Student Schedules / Books

How do I register for my 1L classes? What courses will I be taking?

The Admissions Office registers all 1L students for their classes beginning in mid-July. Once you have been registered, your class schedule will be available in TitanConnect.

Fall courses for the following divisions are as follows:

Full-time JD Day Students: ALTA, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Torts, and Property

Part-time JD Day/Evening Students: ALTA, Civil Procedure, Contracts, and Torts

Extended JD Day/Evening Students: ALTA, Civil Procedure, and Contracts

Once I've been registered, how do I view my schedule in TitanConnect?

To view your schedule, log in to TitanConnect.  Then click TitanConnect Self-Service > Student > Registration > Student Detail Schedule > Select Term: "Fall 2015."

When and how do I buy my books?

You may check the status of your book lists using UDM Law's Barnes and Noble Bookstore's website. Please note that you will need your course schedule, which is available in TitanConnect. Many professors also post their book lists in TitanConnect.

Official Transcript

Where do I send my official undergraduate transcript?

The American Bar Association (ABA) requires that all accredited law schools receive an official transcript from a first-year student's undergraduate degree-granting institution before that student begins classes. The transcript included in your Credential Assembly Service Report from LSAC does not fulfill this ABA requirement. Please have your undergraduate degree-granting institution send an official transcript that includes the date your degree was granted to the following address:

The transcript must be sent directly from the undergraduate university. Electronic and/or student issued copies cannot be accepted.

What if my transcript won't be ready by the deadline?

If your transcript will not be ready by the due date listed in your admission letter, please contact Elizabeth Hallack to arrange an alternate deadline.

I just graduated this spring, how do I know my degree has been posted to my transcript?

Many schools have an option to hold the transcript request until the degree has been posted. Please look for "Hold for Degree" or similar language on your transcript request form.

How will I know my transcript has been received?

The Admissions Office will e-mail you to confirm that your official transcript has been received.

Housing

What housing options are available?

UDM Law does not have on-campus housing. However, a list of local apartments is available on our website. If you have housing questions, please contact Barbara Stockwell-Buslepp.

Can you provide assistance with finding a roommate?

On our admitted student website, we do have a roommate matching service. You may either search current listings or submit your own. Please note that you must be logged in (using your TitanConnect username and password) to the UDM Law website to view the service.

Parking

Where do I park as a 1L?

First-year parking is at Christ Church. Entering students begin to utilize this lot during Orientation. Directions to Christ Church can be found here.

What is the cost to park?

The parking fee is $347 for the academic year (Fall, Spring, and Summer) and will be billed to your student account.

How do I pre-register for parking?

You can pre-register for parking by e-mailing Shamaila Khan. The parking fee will be added to the student accounts of those who request parking. Permits can be picked up during Orientation.

JD International Students

How do I apply for my I-20 visa?

Stephanie Winbigler from the Admissions Office will contact our incoming 1L JD and Dual JD students in late-May to start the I-20 process. For specific questions, please contact Ms. Winbigler at 313-596-9841.

 

Miscellaneous

How do I obtain a locker?

The Student Bar Association (SBA) coordinates all locker assignments. During the first few weeks of school, they will send e-mail announcements on how to reserve your locker. The price for a locker rental is $15 for the academic year (Fall, Spring, and Summer) and students must provide their own locks.

Are there any fitness facilities I may use?

Absolutely! As a University of Detroit Mercy student, you have access to the Student Fitness Center on the McNichols Campus. Fall and winter intramural sports are also available.

What health insurance options are available?

UDM strongly recommends that each student have health insurance. There are two separate health insurance policies that are available for students:
