Incubator Attorney Program

The Incubator Attorney Program is designed to provide a supportive environment for select new law graduates who are committed to beginning a solo or small firm practice serving low and moderate income clients.

The program is limited to three recent law graduates who have been admitted to practice in Michigan. Participants enter the twelve-month program with a commitment to building a practice representing clients on a low-bono or sliding fee scale. Participants also agree to provide at least 100 hours of pro bono legal services in cooperation with the current collaborative partnerships. In exchange for this commitment, participants receive office space, basic office fixtures, on-going training and mentoring, networking opportunities, and a variety of other resources necessary to build their own independent and sustainable law practice.

The Incubator Attorney Program was first established in October 2014 as a collaborative partnership between the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and the American Bar Association. Initial funding for the Incubator was provided by the American Bar Association through the Legal Access Job Corps Catalyst Grant Program, a highly competitive one-year grant awarded to only seven organizations nationwide. Detroit Mercy Law was one of only two law schools to receive this grant.  Since the inception of this program, nine attorneys have participated in the Attorney Incubator Program to launch their own legal practicess.
